Organ Donar OPT OUT SCHEME urged

Recommended Posts

The only way to combat the transplant "crisis" in Britain is to treat all people as organ donors unless they opt out, the Chief Medical Officer has said. The NHS needs three times the number of organ donors on its register, Sir Liam Donaldson said.Sir Liam used the unveiling of his annual report on the nation's health to call for the opt-out scheme in a bid to resolve the problem.According to figures quoted in his report, 70% of people want to donate their organs after death but only 20% are on the NHS organ donor register.Sir Liam said: "There are simply not enough organs donated to meet the need for transplant, with one person dying every day while waiting for a transplant.
What you think?

That is a great idea. People are too lazy to sign up, they will be too lazy to opt out. Its a great decision.
Yep. I'm with it.I'm not a registered organ donor, but they can take my organs when I die. However, there are ideological principles to consider. What about a Jehovah's witness that dies on the way to home when they were planning to opt out? I also wouldn't be too happy giving my stuff to people that killed themselves e.g. smokers and alcoholics. I guess if there ends up being an abundance of organs then that's fine, but f*ck letting alchie have my liver coz he was further up on the list than someone that randomly got liver problems.

I dont know why but that really made me laugh.when I was gettin my provisional my mum said I wasnt allowed to tick the box so I signed up on the register.I forgot about the ethics of it all. Its just such an emotive subject and the system of organ assignments will never be 100% fair.

I know its essentially a good thing but I feel something against it still.Maybe cos it kind of pressures people into being donars, you will look like a right c*nt opting out init?
I guess, but you shouldnt feel social pressure, its your decision. There are people out there that feel no way about it, so IMO why not just be on the register. Most people dont get the chance to save lives, this could be it.

nah i jus think if i was in the life threatening situation, an organ donor or whatever would be able to give me a chance to liveso i gotta honour that by being an organ donor and potentially savin someone if possible coz they could save meor whateversome circle tingi see it as if i aint an organ donor n ur in a major crash or one of ur major organs stops workin then u shouldnt get an organ coz u refuse to give yours towards the same situationya dig?

The government are hoping that there will be an increase due to people not being aware that they must opt out , otherwise those people would have already opted to be organ donars and they wouldn't have any problem in the first place . But of course there will be a minority of people who were unaware of the organ donation scheme and sign up . Ultimately I think this is a bad idea and morally wrong because many people don't agree with organ donation for ethical or religious reasons . It seems to me as bad as if the govt. were going to adopt a 'guilty until proven innocent' rather than innocent until proven guilty .

No, they're hoping to get that large number of people that would happily donate, but haven't actually signed up to be donors through laziness or whatever. There's a statistic above.

In theory this seems like a good idea. I know it will help loads of people etc...BUTAnother government scheme to control us. So now we have to go to the bother of opting out if we DONT' want our bodies butchered after death?!What next - opt of charity donations? ã10 a month off everyones wages unless they opt out?

It's hardly "bother" to fill out a form and return it, is it?

To behonest i don't want anyone getting my Organs that my mum and dad produced and the fact i worked hard all my life keeping my Organs healthy just to give them to some drunk . If i ever do want to give them away i would possibly only agree on the fact that they would be going to a child that desperatly needs them to stay alive and they visit my family regulary and there parents look after my kids now and then and we become a close family.
