How is doing pull ups any different from doing lat pull down (apart from being stuck with one weight)..What are rows?I've never done deadlifts, i'm reading up on em, what weight should i start on? (To give an idea of my back strength i lift about 70kg on the lat pull down)

pull ups are far better than pull downs for back. anythign involving the use of your bodyweight in isolation is good.they are better bcos it is unassisted, the pulldown is a machine helping you, so if you pull down 70kg it takes off about 20% of real effort. so you're obvisouly doing more work if you can pull 75kg up, if thats your weight for example. start low with Deadlifts go as high as you can. its good to ask someoen to show you, cos it can be brutal if you get injured. all i do r weighted pullups, deadlifts and rows.

RowsYou can have seated rows with the cable machine with different handles, the close smaller handles work your lower back, wider does upperYou can bent over rows aswell, where you bend over and pull the BB to your waist, it works ur upper back

That sounds long when i can jus buss an extra 10kg on the lat pulldown
pull downs can never be better than pull ups. its not about how heavy your lifting, its about how isolated the muscles involved are. if you can easily pull yourself up with a WIDE grip for 10-15 reps, and 4 sets then add 10kg and see the difference. the isolation of the back muscles in pullups sh*t over pulldowns anyday, wether your pulling 6tonnes! which u aint..
