This was billed as a clash between experience and youth. It was only partly true; Milan had to use every ounce of energy just as much as their experience to survive the game. Gattusso worked as hard as Flamini just as did Nesta and Kaladze. In the end it was old problems that stopped Arsenal winning a game they utterly dominated for 70 minutes.The old problem was having enough players that shoot from outside the box. Not sure how much difference it would have made but since we just about tried everything, I guess one wonders about that.Arsenal playing like that would have thrashed any team in the Premier League. Bacary Sagna, Gaël Clichy and Mathieu Flamini gave the team the security it needed to go forward and defend. Philippe Senderos did very well. As I said, Senderos is good at everything apart from one-to-one situations but he uses the same kind of interception techniques that Gaël Clichy uses in order to avoid one-to-ones. After 70 minutes when Arsenal dropped a little, it was just as well that Senderos was on the pitch because the build-up play from Milan would not have suited Kolo Touré.Everyone had a good match, including Emmanuel Eboue who seemed to be playing for his life. If he plays like that in the Premiership then he is going to be firmly back in my good books. Flamini did such a great job against Kaka and Alexander Hleb was very cooperative in closing down. Eduardo did well too and Francesc Fabregas was at his level again. Manchester United marked Fabregas out of the game at Old Trafford. It is impossible to do that when Flamini is on the pitch because Flamini can also hurt. The closing down and movement was the best I have seen of Arsenal this season. That was Arsenal's main weapon in the game.Emmanuel Adebayor has announced to all defenders in Europe that to play against him, you have to be awake for 90 minutes. The Italians lapsed only once when the header hit the post. AC Milan veteran defenders are the best at keeping that concentration. I don't think any other team will manage it and I hope that any lapse is Milan is punished by Arsenal.It is sad that after such a performance and expenditure of energy that Arsenal did not get a win. It will be easier going to Milan knowing that a similar performance would do the job. Right now, it might be that psychologically the players feel that they have to do more than that to win while knowing that they were really at the end of what they could give. On the other hand, they might view the chances they missed and looked at the stats and realise that they were just unlucky.Arsenal are not good at cup games. We deal with these two-legged knockout games the same way we play normal games. We try to win it in the first half and catch the opposition in the second half while they come looking for goals. The first half hasn't worked out and now we are going into a do or die game.Not pleasant but we have the security of the away goal and positives from the game. Milan will need to score and they will be nervous about Arsenal scoring. But Milan are vastly experienced and can be patient for 83 minutes but not if we hassle them like we did today.Milan just about coped in this game. I have to say I have never seen the Italian midfield so stretched that even Gattusso found it hard to get close to Arsenal players often enough to disrupt them. I don't think they will fancy the second leg.Birmingham at the weekend could be annoying after this game. Psychologically, Wenger has a lot of work to do over the next two weeks. We also need a good referee like the one today in the second leg. Good referees are crucial against Spanish and Italian teams when they are playing English sides. He should not have booked Eboue and a penalty for Flamini would not have been harsh but he did well against the Italian tactics.That was more adrenaline than anything else provided so far this year. I hope we can finish the job in Milan.
