Fletcher takes a break

On behalf of Darren Fletcher, Manchester United wishes to announce that he is taking an extended break from football for health reasons.

Over the past year he has had several absence periods which we have attributed to a viral illness in order to respect his right to medical confidentiality. Darren has, in fact, been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time preceding this.

Whilst he was able to maintain remission of symptoms for a considerable period this has proved more difficult recently and Darren’s continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

He has therefore accepted medical advice to take an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again.

We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery.

Reserves play Scousers tonight 7pm

/

Since Ronaldo was sold in 2009, Manchester City have spent £282.5 million (net) on player acquisitions, and even thrifty Fulham, perennially mid-table, have parted with £14.1 million. Packaged another way, for every pound Fulham have spent on players since 2009 Manchester United have saved 54p

SAF is starting to piss me off now!!!!!!

"I don't why people keep going on about that" said Ferguson.

"It's never been a route we've taken consistently unless a player that we've been interested in appears but there is no sign of that at the moment. So therefore it's not always suitable to us.

"If you look at the options we have - Phil Jones has played a few games there, Ryan Giggs obviously can play there too and Ji Sung Park is capable of playing there too.

"There are maybe one or two other options - Darron Gibson is an option. He had an early season injury, but he has experience needed to play in central midfield. The options are not too bad.

What do you want him to come out and say when he's asked about signings,

"well at first we didn't really have money to spend on players, but since the owners released that bond issue a few seasons back, we've had transfer funds but as it's a set amount of money over a certain number of years, the focus is now more heavily on wages, which we can't really over commit to, something you have to do to get those really high quality players,

In short if we signed Wesley for £30 mill, and paid him roughly 13 million pounds a year, (£250.000 a week) it wouldnt leave us really much more to play with, and I believe really we need mire than one player to fix the squad, so spunking those sort of figures on one player would be madness if it meant you couldn't do anything else,

So to conclude we can sign players for low prices on high wages if need be, or high prices and relatively low wages, high prices and high wages is not an option when were on about potentially 43 million in the first year and 13 more for the four or so years after that,

So with that said anymore questions on the matter"?

SAF is towing company line an keeping any potential unrest at a minimum, simple really,

If it was possible he would have given his right arm to get a few top quality players, but it wasn't,

Hopefully the early CL exit will force a re-assessment of budgets and funds but that remains to be seen.

The thing you're failing to understand is that SAF actually believes our current crop of midfielders is good enough. Even now with all the injuries and loss of form

No-one is expecting SAF to admit we're in dire straits or that we need wholesale change, because we don't

But an acceptance that the current level of players we have isnt the best and that we're looking for players (in some shape or form) when they're available would go a long way to alie any fears we have

Instead he catergorically denies we have any problems in some way insinuating its all in our head

Any team that has to play Wayne Rooney in midfield has problems.
