Why have we failed to produce defenders who like to defend?

and as for the topic; These things work out weirdTony Mowbray was saying the other week on TheGame podcast how he was a strapping no nonsence centre half, and now look at the football his WBA team plays.Arsenal lack a commanding GK and a commanding centre half. And I don't care what anyone says, theres too many different first languages in the back four. There is no doubt in my mind that makes a difference, Gallas can barely speak English and he's supposed to be the one organising everything.

Why does Bane ruin everything, he put Cahill who plays for Bolton, SMH.
Whats wrong with Cahill?Only reason you think hes sh*t is because Bolton are in the bottom 3...Hes there commanding center back...If they had not sold Anelka they wouldnt be in the bottom 3 and you wouldnt have said what you just said...
If bolton where losing 1-0 without Anelka, then your right I might have not, but they aint so I did and Cahill didnt make the grade at Villa, he got ousted by man at Villa who wouldnt make the grade at Arsenal so how in your world that makes sense only you know...
He didn't get ousted, we never wanted to sell him.He just wanted to play first team football, and he wasn't playing because of MON's "if your in the team and we're playing well, theres no changes policy"IMO he is currently a better centre back than Knight and on a par with Davies.

its doesn't bode well with our high line if they play a crouch and torresesque partnership; the tall c*nt to dominate one of our CBs and then the fast c*nt to get the ball
Rather than changing personnel I still dont get why between Gallas & Toure they didnt figure out, you challenge him in the air, I'll be expecting you to lose but make life difficult for him & as I'm fast I'll grab the knock downs and sniff them out & if we still struggle, then we call Mathieu to just come & sit back here with us & pick up the loose ball.Even more worrying is that all them members of staff didnt pick it up either & tell them...

There's 3 Frenchmen, a Ivorian (who speaks French) & a d*ckhead Spanish keeper, who all speak English, even if limited in clarity, they speak football English 100%. That said Wenger should sign either a commanding English keeper or Hugo Lloris or Landreau.

Cos Mellberg was gonna play RB for the season and we only had Cahill and Laursen with like a week to go for the t.window.Originally Cahill was gonna play RB (played all of pre season there) but wasn't up for it, and rather than giving into his needs and swapping him and olof, MON sent cahill on loan to 'teach him a lesson' (as he did with berger last season) and signed to more CB's.Then when Mellberg signed the pre contract the idea was to have Laursen, Davies, Cahill and Knight as the four with 2 rb's coming in in the Summer, but Cahill didn't wanna be third choice for 6 months and wanted a move to then relegation safe Bolton. How things change, he'd of played regular for us at CB if he'd of stayed, and now it looks like hes gonna be in the championship next season. But I'd have him back in an instant.

Cahill is decent, but please nobody mention him to do with Arsenal again. We are a team challenging for the league and champions league and people are suggesting someone who didn't make it at Villa (for whatever reasons). We want to be in the same bracket as Man Utd and Chelsea (we're obviously not far off), therefore even our subs need to be bordering world class or at least very good (see tevez, nani, bridge, malouda etc). So let's stop with silly talk of bringing in average prem players, cos it is not what we need. We need european class.

ONE NAME DAVID WHEATERTheo-Walcott-Arsenal-David-Wheater-Middlesbrough_659768.jpgDavid James Peter Wheater (born 14 February 1987) is an English footballer, who plays for Middlesbrough. He is a central defender with a penchant for scoring from set-pieces and has had previous loan spells at Doncaster Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Darlington. He had a brief but fruitful loan spell at League One side Doncaster Rovers from January to April 2006.He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a three month loan in September 2006.[1] However, he returned to Middlesbrough on 15 November, after making just one first team appearance.[2] This was due to the fact that the loan was supposed to provide the young defender with valuable experience, but, given he was not playing first team football, he wasn't achieving this, and so Wolves sent him back.[citation needed]On 12 May 2007, Wheater scored his first goal for Middlesbrough, in his first game of the season, against Fulham. He scored again in the match against Birmingham, on 1 September 2007. Wheater was named in an understrength Middlesbrough side away to Bristol City in the FA Cup third round, when he saved his team with a goal as he burst forward from the back and scored the winner in a 2–1 at Ashton Gate. Matt Le Tissier was reporting the match on Gillette Soccer Saturday and made the following comment about the goal; "Wheater carried on his run and he came in with a right foot finish - a great finish for a centre back - it was Beckenbauer-esque!" He has just signed a five year contract with Middlesbrough lasting until 2012. Fabio Capello stated when naming his first provisional England squad, that England U21 players like David Wheater, Joe Hart, Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott were in his plans for future squads, and weren't included in the full squad due to the importance of the upcoming England U21 international. On 20 March 2008, Wheater was called up to the England squad by boss Fabio Capello.[3] He was advised by Middlesbrough team mates not to take his autograph book if he made the final cut, [4] however he was not included in the Capello's final 23. George Boateng revealed that Wheater regularly comes into the Boro changing rooms with merchandise to sign for family and friends. [5]

As former players...Arsene Wenger was a former defender.Pat Rice was a right back.Boro Primorac was a centre back (a notorious one at that).Neil Banfield was a centre back.Even Vic Akers, the kit man & womens manager, was a left back.Gary Lewin too was a goalkeeper. Then you got Steve Bould & Steve Gatting with the youth team. Gilles Grimandi as a scout.Martin Keown doing his bits coaching & scouting part-time for the club, while he gets his badges.Leaving only David Court & Liam Brady as pretty much the only attacking/flair former players out of our coaching staff. My point is how can a roster of staff account for...A team that can't defend. Not producing a solid line of defenders from grass roots.Or at least taking highly rated 16-21 year olds and making them very good defenders...Or spotting & buying very good defenders from around the globe. Grimandi gets props for getting Sagna tho.
Thats easy and can be answered in one word. ENVYNobody starts playing football in life saying Im gonna be the greatest defender ever, they all wanted to be great scorers, everyone of em. They wanted to be the forward player so they look for the "defender" that is good at balancing the 2.How many times have you seen Toure and Gallas charge forward in open play like was lookin to score? Now think about how many times you see Ferdinand/Terry/Vidic/Carragher do this stupidity.Find a semi decent defender* who has little or no interest in charging forward and you will have a much better base to build from.*I added the the 'Semi decent defender' cos I recognise that Senderos AKA Sendimbak shows little interest in going forward. Hes just crap.

On ESPN Classic Alan Smith was being interviewed about the '90/91 season. Talking about how day in day out it was attack vs defence, always working on the back four since that was George Grahams philosophy, work you're way up from the back, solid defence and anything else is a bonus. Would never happen now because of Arsenals penchant for flashy football but if some of the system was instilled then hoy. Grind out some 1-0's.

Co-diddly-sign...The ONE English player I'd say Arsenal could GET and NEED....
