VIP2's Apple Mac Users....

Wiping your computer on Windows would help for the following reasons

- it frees up  space

-it clears resources from apps

-it clears startup apps

-its leaves the HD empty and therefore not fragmented

On your mac

-it will free up space, though you can do this yourself, files might be hidden in [HD]/Library and [user]/Library folders (because dragging and dropping an app into the recycler bin doesn't always delete all its resources)

-it clears resources from apps same way, but doing the above or even just uninstalling + reinstalling will do that

-it will remove your startup apps but you can do that manually

-it will leave your HD less fragmented as it would have with Windows, but again you can use a defragmenter yourself and also if you have an SSD fragmentation means nothing (because there's no arm moving about, every part of the drive takes the same amount of time to access from wherever)

Still relatively new to this mac life, mine is untouched by illegal wares, but I need a free copy of photoshop urgently, best sauce?

I suppose this is too late for you?

Anyone done a clean install of OS X before?

Looking to upgrade my MBP and give it a fresh start.

What is it exactly that you want to do? Wipe all your data and install fresh?

Basically, mac has started moving really sluggish lately. Going to back up all my files, then only install the programs  I use daily.

Yeah

Clear your desktop of shit - the way the Mac graphics processing works means if you have a lot of icons on your desktop it will slow your performance down

Check activity monitor and sort by %CPU

See what programmes are using the highest amount and what percentage they are taking up, select Memory and sort by Memory, and see what procceses you have running in the background, check they are safe to quit if there is anything needless taking up too much RAM, and close them

Check how much space you have

Apple Logo in the top left > About this mac > Storage

shot-1-2x.png

From there you can see what is being taken up by what, and choose which files to move somewhere else (i.e. ext. HD) or delete

Check

System preferences > users > Login Items

And check which apps are selected there, these will be ones that run automatically on start-up, too many and youll be slowed down, a lot of things like Spotify, Steam and Itunes auto-start upon login and eat up quite a lot of ram

Delete any other user accounts on the machine

If you do all that and your machine is still slow, upgrade the OS (if possible)

(Sorry I don't know how much of this stuff you know so wanted to cover everything just incase)

A fresh install will probably acheive the same result, but if there are problems with any of the above, you will encounter the same problems later on

Nice one, knew most of that but didn't know about the desktop items, I have a shit load on there.

Chrome is eating a lot of my cpu, especially if I try and open more than 3 tabs at a time.

What anti-virus does everyone have? I know its not considered essential for Macs, I like it for piece of mind, and Avast is cpu intensive when updating.

The day i bought my mac i slapped chrome on there and within 20 mins of Y.tube the fans started goingg crazy

I would just make the move to safari bro , especially if you have and iPhone/pad cause it all syncs and its actually a v good browser

we roll out AVG cloud care @ work so i use that , i would try AVG FREE. Does the job and flags up any suspicious files.
