A 24-year-old professional footballer has been arrested after a fatal motorway collision in which two children died.

Luke McCormick, a goalkeeper with Plymouth Argyle football club, is being held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.Two boys aged eight and 10 were killed after the silver Toyota Previa they were travelling in collided with McCormick’s black Range Rover on the M6 in Staffordshire. The Toyota careered down the embankment and hit several trees.The Toyota’s driver, a 37-year-old man, was seriously injured. He was taken to to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire where his condition was described as “serious but not life threatening”.One child was pronounced dead at the scene and the second died in hospital.A 49-year-old man and two boys aged 8 and 15, all in the Toyota, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.Ambulances rushed to the scene on the southbound carriageway between junctions 16 and 15, near Keele Services, just before 5.45am.A former England youth international, he has twice been named the club’s player of the season.The footballer was unhurt.
