CRISTIANO Ronaldo faces at least eight weeks out - and maybe more - after surgery on his damaged right ankle takes place within the next 48 hours. And the bad news only got worse for Sir Alex Ferguson last night after it emerged that the Portuguese FA believe they have landed Old Trafford No.2 Carlos Queiroz as their new national manager. TheManchester United boss, having barred Ronaldo's £70million exit to Real Madrid for at least a year, had believed that he could relax.Instead he must confront the very real prospect that Ronaldo (right) could miss the first eight games ofAdvertisementUnited's Premier League defence, including the trips to Liverpool and Chelsea.Reports from Portugal last night indicated that Ronaldo's injury is worse than was first thought. The injury, and the expected length of his absence, has taken the heat out of the Real Madrid affair. But Queiroz's departure as Ferguson's right-hand man will cause a headache not only in who replaces him, but threatens a worrying spin-off.Without Queiroz around the fear will be that any chance United had of keeping Ronaldo out of Real Madrid's clutches in the long term will be gone.According to reports from his home country last night Queiroz is now preparing to take a £1m pay cut by replacing Luiz Felipe Scolari..

Didn't realise it wasn't official yet. Somebody told me about it yesterday so I thought his position as Portugal coach had been announced. He'll definitely be a bigger loss but I think it's quite possible he'll go.

I'm VERY intruiged to see United without CQ.Fergie is a top manager but he relies on CQ ALOT imo.The 'dark days' for United were when Walter Smith was assistant init?I was chatting with someone from here on MSN, and they were saying that Quireoz brought new methods which Pat Rice doesn't for Arsenal, I c/s this fully. And Liverpool without Pako lost a bit of momentum as well...Will be interesting to see who Fergie goes for as a number two, you'd think it would be someone with experience on the continent and understand modern football...Roy Hodgson woulda been a decent shout, as would a return for McClaren, but evidently not now.

Ole just recently became the reserve team coach so I wanna see him do that job for at least 2 seasonsWouldn't mind seeing Cantona come in and do Ole's old job coaching the first team strikers or another coaching role in the clubAs for the number 2 role...
