FIGHT TO HAPPEN NOV 15 IN VEGASUFC heavyweight champion Randy (The Natural) Couture will defend his belt against Brock Lesnar on Nov. 15 in Las Vegas.President Dana White made the announcement on a media conference call Tuesday afternoon. In what White called a “mega-fight,” Couture versus Lesnar will headline UFC 91 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in the first of a "heavyweight tournament." The winner would have the heavyweight belt and would next take on the winner of a December bout between current interim heavyweight title-holder Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir to unify the championships. Nogueira and Mir are currently opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter Season 8.Couture hasn't fought since August 2007 and announced he was leaving the UFC in October. The two sides had been in a legal battle over the contract of the three-time champion, who felt he should be free to fight elsewhere. But the dispute has now been settled, clearing way for Couture's return.“We’ve had some problems with Randy (but) we’ve resolved them all,” White said. “It took us some time, but we’re all good now.”Couture confirmed that he signed a new three-fight contract and said that both sides made concessions in the renegotiating of his deal, which will see the 45-year-old continue to fight in the organization beyond the bout with Lesnar, win or lose.“I’d rather fight in the Octagon than anywhere else,” said Couture, who added fighting in court battles wasn’t much fun.Asked how it came to be that Lesnar, who has only one win in two appearances in the UFC, was named the No. 1 contender, White said it was more about the interest in having these two heavyweights square off.“(Lesnar) looked damn good against Heath Herring,” White said. “Couture versus Lesnar will be the biggest fight in UFC history.”After losing in his UFC debut against Mir in February 2007, Lesnar beat a top contender in Herring in only his third professional fight. Lesnar, a 31-year-old former NCAA champion and WWE pro wrestler, believes he'll do just fine facing a guy who represents an even bigger step up in competition."We're going to come up with a good game plan like we did with Heath Herring," Lesnar said. "I'm going to come into this fight well prepared and with a plan to win the title."Both fighters and White dismissed any notion that this is just a tune-up fight for Couture for a potential matchup with Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko. While White admitted the organization is still interested in signing Emelianenko they wouldn't speculate on future bouts involving unsigned fighters, especially ones under contract elsewhere. Emelianenko currently has a three-fight deal with rival promotion Affliction."We would never interfere with someone else's contract," White said. "We'll see what happens."
Don't you think it's abit early for Brock to be in the title picture? Don't get me wrong he is a beast when inside the cage.
