Compare Henry Winter's mocking of Redknapp criticism (http://bit.ly/kAOlnI para 15) with his call for Benitez's head (http://bit.ly/mEC27u).

It's laughable!

And one of the FFT writers (who is a Spurs fan) said this -

Journalists who like nothing better than knocking the likes of Wenger and Benitez get all upset when somebody questions Redknapp...I don't care if he's 'great bloke' when you're all eating out of his hand in the press room. I care about nine points from ten games

Dalglish signals his ambition by stealing march on United in race to sign Young

Tony Barrett

The determination of Liverpool to keep pace with Manchester United as England’s most successful club has led them to edge in front of their rivals in the race to sign Ashley Young, the Aston Villa winger.

Young enters the final year of his contract next season and though Villa continue to insist publicly that the England player is not for sale, privately they are becoming increasingly resigned to the probability that he will have to be sold this summer.

United had been favourites to capture the 25-year-old’s signature, but Liverpool have moved into pole position thanks to their willingness to offer superior personal terms and Young’s desire to play regular first-team football, which is more likely at Anfield than Old Trafford.

Liverpool are keen to sign two top-class wide players during the next transfer window as Kenny Dalglish — whose appointment as permanent manager is imminent — tries to add strength in depth to his squad and the kind of attacking verve to bring out the best in Andy Carroll.

United are already blessed with several options on the flanks, with Nani being kept out of Mr. Ferguson’s side by Antonio Valencia. With Park Ji Sung having also enhanced his reputation as a big-game player and Ryan Giggs continuing to defy his advancing years, Ferguson’s need for a winger is markedly less pressing.

Villa will hope that the intensity of the rivalry between Liverpool and United will provoke an auction for a player whom they signed from Watford for £9 million in January 2007.

But any hopes of a £20 million sale are likely to be unfulfilled, with neither of the interested clubs willing to spend more than £15 million on Young, who would become available on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.

Liverpool’s resurgence under Dalglish has renewed optimism that they can compete for the best players, with Damien Comolli, the director of football, predicting a busy summer at Anfield as the task of winning the title for the first time since 1990 begins again. Their desire to prove that they can go toe to toe with United will also increase fears at Villa Park that Liverpool could make a double transfer raid, with Stewart Downing also featuring high on Dalglish’s wanted list.

Downing has been linked with Liverpool on several occasions, but the move has never materialised and Villa are keen to tie him down to a new and improved long-term contract.

Dalglish has identified Downing, 26, as another player, like Young, who has the necessary Premier League experience and talent to go straight into his side.

Liverpool are expected to confirm Kenny Dalglish’s appointment as permanent manager in the next 10 days.

Kenny Dalglish finally poised to sign deal as he targets Ashley Young and Stewart Downing

That will allow the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, to begin to clarify their plans for this summer’s transfer market. Liverpool have emerged as favourites to sign the Aston Villa winger Ashley Young for around £12 million and are also believed to be tracking his club and international team-mate Stewart Downing.

By the time Liverpool face both players at Villa Park on the final day of the campaign, the long-running and increasingly baffling saga concerning Dalglish is likely to be at an end.

Sam Kennedy, FSG’s president, confirmed as long ago as April 9 that talks with the Scot over making the temporary post he took over in January permanent were already under way, reward for the remarkable turnaround in Liverpool’s performances under his tenure.

Despite the dire warnings of Jose Mourinho at the start of the season that Liverpool were getting “worse, worse and worse” and the assertion by his predecessor Roy Hodgson that “95 per cent” of observers would agree with the Portuguese in November, Dalglish has taken the club from the obscurity of 13th place in the Premier League on Jan 8 to within touching distance of a place in the Europa League following Monday night’s 5-2 demolition of Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Though his record of 10 wins, three draws and three defeats in the Premier League is hardly flawless, that he has garnered more points than any team other than Chelsea since taking charge of a side mired in mid-table shows the scale of his achievement.

Such an impressive record only makes the delay in announcing his inevitable ascension to the permanent manager’s post he vacated in February 1991 more inexplicable.

FSG promised upon Dalglish’s appointment that they would conduct a thorough search for the best man to lead the club forward on a permanent basis; though director of football Damien Comolli insisted then that the Scot’s claims would be considered, Dalglish hardly fits the profile FSG had in mind for their first managerial appointment when they took over at Anfield.

They were keen on a young, ambitious manager used to working in the sort of structure they were quick to implement at Liverpool, alongside a director of football, and examined the credentials of the likes of André Villas Boas, at Porto, Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp and Marseille manager Didier Deschamps.

Dalglish, though, has enjoyed such success that all debate has been rendered irrelevant. Even Liverpool’s fans have proved as much: since Dalglish took charge, their volume has increased by 40 per cent to 97 decibels, according to the site fanchants.com.

In an ideal world, the Scot, cast from management’s old school, would probably like a longer contract with greater power over recruitment than the club’s owners would willingly afford him, but his results are unarguable.

“We have been flying since Christmas,” said defender Jamie Carragher. “The manager has come in and made a big difference.

"Whatever he has done has worked. But the players coming in have made a huge difference too. [Luis] Suárez is superb. If he keeps playing like that he will be a bigger legend than I will ever be.”

The Uruguayan – now on five goals for his new club – will be joined in the summer by more than half a dozen players, once Dalglish’s appointment is confirmed, with the Aston Villa duo, as well as Bolton’s Gary Cahill, Newcastle’s José Enrique and Sylvain Marveaux, of Rennes, believed to be high on Comolli and Dalglish’s agenda.

It will be interesting to see Liverpool next season, they wer playing without any pressure in the 2nd half of the season, once the expectation is back then we will see what they are really made of, but Kenny has done well.

Regarding Harry n Rafa…

I’ve watched bare spurs games this season, I would say squad rotation is the only thing u can get Harry for, as I feel he aint utilized the squad players like Niko. Other than that he has played his best team week in week out, the dumb spurs fans moan when VDV is on the right but he does it to play 2 upfront, which is attacking and justified.

Rafa was making silly choices, playing silly line-ups and tinkering with the side, there wasnt enough consistency about it. Liverpool is a much bigger club than Spurs also, obviously Harry is a media fav but hes done a fantastic job

Both Mourinho and Ferguson changed their sides more than Benitez, the difference was they had better squads. We saw what happened to the fitness of Torres and Gerrard when we basically ran them into the ground.

Look at the Keane situation, Jamie Redknapp amongst others were saying Benitez was wrong for playing him on the left....where did Redknapp play him for a period without anyone saying anything?

He is exactly like Hodgson in the sense his passport saves him from a lot of flak. When we were playing Fulham the commentator was saying what a change Kenny had made from Benitez as if Hodgson was never in charge.

Spurs have got a strong squad and in more capable hands I reckon they could have done a lot better this season.
